SOUTH CAROLINA GOURDS
TED & DONNA BAIR - We are committed to living the good life in retirement. A big part of that is doing what we love best; planting, growing, drying, cleaning, painting gourds, and documenting it all with photos. We hope you enjoy your visit with us.
The first step we take is to germinate quality seeds in early spring to get a jump on the growing season.
Part of the fun of growing gourds is watching the vines grow. Building various structures for the vines is a challenge in itself. This is our wheelchair accessible "GOURD DOME", with the "ARCH OF THE PROMISE" in the background. Some may say that this is simply the product of a retired engineer with a passion for gardening and too much time on my hands. Hey, I don't know what you think; I'm just having FUN!
Nothing could be finer than to see a gourd blossom in the morning. This is the male bloom of a Miniature Nigerian Bottle Gourd.
The excitement of being totally engulfed with gourds is hard to describe. The speed at which the vines grow presents just one more challenge, but just look at the REWARD!
Even the gourd washing process can be fun if it is done with the right attitude. Donna is shown with her radio, fan, telephone, cold drink, and our dogs for company.
